There are certain items of clothing we know everyone hates, but we wear them anyway – because theyre comfy or because we like them and dont care what anyone thinks.
A pair of jeans that are so ripped theyre falling apart. A T-shirt with a truly ridiculous slogan on the front. Those weird barefoot trainers.
Trying to dress for everyone elses preferences will only end with frustration and misery – its much better to just wear whatever you fancy.
So if your current outfit has multiple counts on YouGovs list of the UKs most-hated clothes, dont panic.
But if you are dressing for other peoples approval, you might want to avoid pairing your Speedos with Crocs and elbow patches.
YouGov surveyed 3,277 people about their clothing preferences to find out the UKs most hated items of clothing.
Topping the list of the most hated bits of clothing: Speedos, those tight swimming trunks your dad wears on holiday. 69% of people said they absolutely despised them.
Just below Speedos are leather trousers. We reckon people have been put off by that Ross scene in friends, or theyve attempted to put on leather trousers on a hot day and regretted it dearly.
Shockingly, both Speedos and leather trousers are more hated than Crocs, which we were convinced were the most hated fashion monstrosities around. Blame Balenciaga for their rehabilitation.
The UK's most hated items of clothing:
- Leather trousers
- Clothes with elbow patches
- Red trousers
- Deep v-neck t-shirts
- Sweater vests
Interestingly, theres a real gender divide when it comes to jumpsuits. 60% of men hate them compared to 43% of women, and 45% of women say they like jumpsuits versus 20% of men.
Berets are also divisive (men are more likely to hate them), as well as Crocs (women are more likely to hate them).
Beyond individual items of clothing, people of the UK hate particular style choices quite a bit.
88% of people said wearing low slung trousers that show your underwear is a bad look, 82% arent fans of wearing pyjamas outdoors, and 79% bash wearing socks with sandals.
The UK's most hated style choices:
- Wearing low slung trousers so that underwear is clearly showing
- Wearing pyjamas outdoors
- Wearing socks with sandals
- Visible panty line
- White socks with black trousers/shoes
- Black bra with a white top
- Wearing football tops outside of a sporting context
- Double denim
